Supplemental irrigation using brackish water on maize in tropical semi-arid regions of Brazil: yield and economic analysis

چکیده
ABSTRACT: Supplemental irrigation during dry spells could reduce maize yield losses in tropical semi-arid regions, notably small farms. However, good quality water reserves are not sufficient to meet the demands of farming communities. Consequently, our objective was evaluate productivity and profitability under different simulated rainfall scenarios, with without supplemental (SI) brackish water. The field experiments were carried out cropping seasons 2018 2019 on Ultisol. experiment followed a randomized block design split-plot scheme four replicates. plots formed by simulating supply soil corresponding scenarios (rainy, normal, drought severe drought), sub-plots or SI (Electrical conductivity 4.5 dS m?1). Mean yields green ears 13,083, 11,532, 10,358 9,609 kg ha?1 for rainy, as supplemented For same treatments values 11,394, 7,896, 3,913 1,374 ha?1, respectively. Data farmer's income showed that supplementation becomes economically advantageous from 0.9, 1.0 2.4 ha, respectively, while cultivation is last two scenarios. conditions, however, using reduced commercial 27 % negative effects farmers’ profitability. In this case, it necessary use either lower salinity select salt tolerant crops.

Trend analysis and detection of precipitation fluctuations in arid and semi-arid regions
The most important impacts of climate change relate to temperature and precipitation. Precipitation is particularly important, because changes in precipitation patterns may lead to floods or droughts in different areas. Also, precipitation is a major factor in agriculture and in recent years interest has increased in learning about precipitation variability for periods of months to annual and s...
متن کاملAlfalfa Water Use and Yield under Different Sprinkler Irrigation Regimes in North Arid Regions of China
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is one of the major crops grown in Northern China in recent years, however, the current serious water shortage conditions present a challenge to the growth of this crop, especially if efficient use of water is considered in forage production for sustainability. This study aimed to evaluate alfalfa productivity and water use efficiency (WUE) under different sprinkler ir...
متن کاملExploring the relationship between land use and surface water quality using multivariate statistics in arid and semi-arid regions
The relative impacts of different types of land use on the surface water quality are yet to be ascertained and quantified. In this paper, the influence of different types of land use on surface water quality is investigated. Rain events samples from different land use in the central plateau, Iran, were analyzed for major ions. Statistical analyses were employed to examine the statistical relati...
متن کاملAnalysis of Farms Performance Using Different Sources of Irrigation Water: A Case Study in a Semi-Arid Area
Improving production efficiency is the main objective of government action to avoid efficiency losses and to increase the income of farmers. The aim of this study was to analyze performance levels of farms in the irrigated perimeter of Tadla in Morocco, according to the source of irrigation water. Thus, technical, allocative and economic efficiency were analyzed for farms in this area. To estim...
